"All field members of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures get a combat training visit from Auror Mordecai Berrycloth."
— Description[src]

Mordecai Berrycloth was a British wizard employed by the Ministry of Magic in London in the capacity of Auror,[1] under head of department Harry Potter.

Biography[]

Mordecai Berrycloth co-signed an internal evaluation on Grim Fawley written by Gareth Greengrass that recommended that Grim be promoted to the position of Unspeakable in the Department of Mysteries. Although he originally wanted to write his own letter of recommendation, his respect for Grim led him to settle for a co-signature. Constance Pickering would later claim that Berrycloth's co-signature was what pushed Grim's application to be accepted.[1]

In the 2010s, Berrycloth led a spellcasting workshop about how to approach casting spells against Confoundables, attended by a Calamity Investigator working for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force. Berrycloth's lessons in determined spellcasting helped the Calamity Investigator more successfully return Foundables from Traces. Berrycloth later invited this same Calamity Investigator to help co-host another lecture about creative spellwork and adaptive casting, helping the Calamity Investigator learn how to overcome Traces more clearly and increasing their ability to successfully return them.[1]

Berrycloth also presented a dissertation on how different Traces could be easier or harder to overcome based on the caster's ability to all of the members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, including the same Calamity Investigator, helping them more successfully return Traces. Berrycloth later worked with the same Calamity Investigator on subtle methods to maximise the effectiveness of their Weakening Hex and on an alternate stance to maximise the effectivness of their Confusion Hex, enabling them to utilise these spells on their foes more effectively. Berrycloth also visited the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, where he held a course in combative magic for their field members; Magizoologist members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force were also in attendance.[1]

Later, Berrycloth, becoming tired of the spate of sloppy wandwork among members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, sent a memo ordering all Task Force members to attend a casting seminar. This seminar helped the Task Force members to more effectively land Critical Casts on Adversaries in Feared Chains.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Moredcai Berrycloth was described as being "charisma-impaired", suggesting that he was a rather dull individual. However, his position as an Auror employed by the British Ministry of Magic and Constance Pickering's description of him as "not just any Auror" suggest that he was also brave enough to serve in this position and his willingness to help members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force improve their spellcasting skills implies that he was a skilled and helpful teacher of those working around him.[1]
