"Here lies Morven Merriweather, beloved by all who knew him as the wizard we wished he was."
— Morven's epitaph[src]

Morven Merriweather was a wizard and the ancestor of the Merriweather family. After his death, he returned as a ghost.[1]

Biography[]

Morven was the owner of a house in Hogsmeade that belonged to his family for five generations and later to two generations of the Golding family.[1] After his death, he returned as a ghost; his great-great-great-granddaughter, Glenna, wondered if he stuck around because Hogsmeade was a lovely village.[2]

During his life, Morven had a son who was born a Squib. Morven believed he was destined to be overlooked in the wizarding world and pushed him away, eventually making him leave Hogsmeade to live among the Muggles.[3]

Before he died he told his family they needn't to bother in burring him as he was sure to awake at any moment. They went ahead with it anyway and buried him in the Hogsmeade Graveyard.[4]

As a ghost, Morven remained in his family home. The house was passed down to his descendants, eventually being owned by his great-great-grandson Tiburon Merriweather, and after him, to Glenna and her husband Shane Golding.[1] Morven was banned from going into the Hog's Head Inn, and Glenna was surprised more establishments didn't ban him as he was not exactly good for business.[2]

In 2011, Glenna saw a picture of a Hogwarts student that looked remarkably like Tiburon and told Morven about them. When Glenna invited the student home, Morven received them at the entrance and told Glenna he couldn't see the resemblance. Later that day, Morven followed Nyle, Glenna's son, and the student into the Shrieking Shack and saw them talking.[1]

Personality and traits[]

Morven was a grumpy wizard and quite hidebound due to having been born centuries back. Most of the time, he complained and scolded his descendants, especially Glenna Golding, who lived in the house that had once been his during his lifetime. He was sometimes harsh to Nyle Golding as well, for in his era, Squibs like Nyle were treated poorly, and he carried that same bias even after death.[5]

Etymology[]

Morven is a gender-neutral given name of Irish and Gaelic origin. Rooted in the Scottish Gaelic name, a' Mhór Bheinn, it is the moniker of the Morven mountain in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Breaking down the name, Beinn, a common Gaelic term for mountain, traces its origins to the Old Irish benn, meaning "peak", while mór signifies "big".[6]
