These paintings were situated around Hogwarts Castle during the late 19th century. When dormant, they were fully black, but when illuminated by the Wand-Lighting Charm, they would reveal a location nearby that had a moth. If the moth was drawn back to the painting using the charm, the puzzle would be considered complete.[1]
History[]
In the 1890–1891 school year, Lenora Everleigh enlisted the help of the new fifth-year student to understand these puzzles. The other students thought that she was "barmy". Upon completing the puzzles, the student would be rewarded with pages to be included in their copy of the Wizard's Field Guide.[1]
