Mr Trismus, Mouth Magician was a shop in Diagon Alley which advertised itself as a toothmonger.[1]
The awnings of the shop were shaped like a mouth and teeth, with tonsils as its stained glass window.[2] It was above Herbert's Sherbets, and their shared building was sandwiched between Oldknowe Books and Mourning & Starr Armourers.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- "Trismus" from the Ancient Greek "τρισμός" ("trismós"; "gnashing [of teeth]"), refers to a pathological condition, alternatively known as "lockjaw", in which the mouth is held shut by a sustained spasm of the masseter (jaw) muscle, which is often observed in cases of tetanus.[4][5]
- When reading about Victorian medicine, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Illustrated Edition illustrator Jim Kay came across the term and found it interesting, which was what inspired him to create this shop and include it in his depiction of Diagon Alley.[6][2][1]

So after reading about Victorian medicine, I gave the tooth magician the name of ‘Mr. Trismus’ – trismus being the affliction known as ‘lockjaw’."
