The Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee was a division of the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. Members of this committee thought up excuses that would explain magical happenings to Muggles.[1] Unlike the Office of Misinformation, who became involved in only the very worst magical-Muggle collisions and liaised with the Muggle Prime Minister,[2] this committee dealt with the more minor incidents.
History[]
In 1981, the committee came up with an excuse for the deaths of the Muggles who were killed with an explosion spell the night Peter Pettigrew framed Sirius Black for betraying the Potter family to Voldemort, blaming it on a gas leak.
During the 1990–1991 school year, Jacob's sibling and Barnaby Lee helped a clerk come up with a Muggle-worthy excuse for a dragon attack in the Muggle world.[3] Jacob's sibling worked with them on several other occasions, such as when inventing an explanation for excessive owl activity provoked by Celestina Warbeck's new song[4] and covering up an Erumpent horn explosion.[5]
