A mule was a hybrid animal produced by cross-breeding a male donkey with a female horse.[1] Mules were typically sterile and were often used as a beast of burden by humans.[1]

In the 18th century, Bartholomew Barebone, an American No-Maj, tipped off several newspaper reporters about the existence of the wizarding world, showing them the wand he stole from Dorcus Twelvetrees.[2] Some of them printed pictures of Dorcus's wand, describing it as having a "kick like a mule" when waved.[2]

Bane derisively asked Firenze if he was a "common mule" when he caught the other centaur letting Harry Potter ride on his back in the Forbidden Forest in 1991.[3]
