This Screaming Yo-yo was owned by Mundungus Fletcher during his time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was released as part of a limited time promotion, having flames drawn on its sides and producing a particularly musical scream.[1]
History[]
Mundungus Fletcher obtained this Screaming Yo-yo at some point during his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and considered it his favourite toy. However, this Screaming Yo-yo was confiscated by Argus Filch and placed in his office. Mundungus was deeply saddened by the loss of this Screaming Yo-yo, continuing to miss it for years.[1]
During the 1985–1986 school year, Mundungus attempted to reclaim a Bowtruckle named Needlefingers that had been under the care of Rubeus Hagrid and Jacob's sibling, as he desired to use it to pick locks, threatening to report them to the Ministry of Magic for theft if they didn't return Needlefingers to him or give him another Bowtruckle as a replacement. Jacob's sibling was able to convince Mundungus to accept a trade for something of equal monetary value from the Hogwarts grounds in exchange for Needlefingers and decided to check Filch's office for any confiscated valuables to use for the trade.[1]
Upon arriving in Filch's office, Jacob's sibling found Merula Snyde using Needlefingers to pick open a lock on a trunk. After explaining the situation to her, Merula agreed to help Jacob's sibling look for something valuable in Filch's office to give to Mundungus in exchange for Needlefingers, offering Jacob's sibling to help her look through the trunk she and Needlefingers had just opened. The two searched through the trunk for valuables, but found that it only contained several old Screaming Yo-yos, including this one, which they particularly noticed due to the flames drawn on its sides. Before they could search the rest of the office for potential valuables, Needlefingers alerted them to the presence of Mrs Norris, meaning that Filch wasn't too far. Unwilling to leave empty-handed, Jacob's sibling and Merula grabbed this Screaming Yo-yo and hoped it would be sufficient for the trade, hoping they could come up with another way to stop Mundungus from taking Needlefingers if it wasn't.[1]
Jacob's sibling and Merula brought both Needlefingers and this Screaming Yo-yo to Hagrid's Hut for the trade. However, when Mundungus saw Needlefingers, he immediately called off the trade, claiming that no item could match the pricelessness of Needlefingers. Jacob's sibling attempted to get Mundungus to at least see what they had collected, but Mundungus was adamant that they hand over Needlefingers to him. Merula angrily claimed that they just had "a worthless Screaming Yo-yo with some dumb flames on it", which seemed to pique Mundungus's interest, with him even asking to take the "worthless" yo-yo with him as well as Needlefingers. Although Mundungus denied being interested in the Screaming Yo-yo, he was eventually convinced to explain his connection with this Screaming Yo-yo. Despite the yo-yo being significantly less valuable monetarily than Needlefingers, Jacob's sibling was able to convince Mundungus to make the trade, allowing Mundungus to reclaim his favourite childhood toy and Needlefingers to remain safely at Hogwarts.[1]
