This copy of Defence Against the Dark Arts by Professor Galatea Merrythought was a Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook which was owned by Muriel during her time at Hogwarts.[1]
History[]
The book was presumably purchased by Muriel along with the rest of her Hogwarts supplies. She used this book during her time at school. When she received a love letter from Gwendolyn she only had time to write a love poem in this textbook before her family fled Great Britain for America due to the fear of the Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Gwendolyn took possession of the book, however seemingly never discovered the poem (which could only be found by using the Revelio Charm) because she created a cursed Howler out of revenge. Gwendolyn never sent the Howler, however, and placed it, this textbook, and her and Muriel's previous correspondences in a box which she hid in the Slytherin common room.[1]
When Dumbledore found the box during the 1980s, he was careful with the contents and sent them to Irma Pince for archiving in the Hogwarts Library, however he kept this book separate to ponder over it. Jacob's sibling arrived, prompted by The Hogwarts Diary, and Dumbledore explained to them Gwendolyn and Muriel's story. Jacob's sibling suggested that there might be something hidden in the book, and cast the Revelio Charm, revealing Muriel's lost reply to Gwendolyn. The poem was an acrostic, and the first letters of each line spelt out "GWEN", showing Muriel's love for Gwendolyn.[1]
