" Urtica dioica, the stinging nettle. Useful in potions, delicious in soups, and said to give you glossy hair. I wouldn't know. Or care."
Zygmunt Budge, Book of Potions[src]

The nettle, also known as the stinging nettle (Urtica diocia) or burn hazel,[2] was a widespread plant known for the stinging hairs that grew on its leaves.

Some dried nettles

Nettles were used in Potion-making: Dried nettles were used in the Boil-Cure Potion,[1] Nettles were presumably the main ingredients of beverages like nettle wine and nettle tea. Nettles could also be made into a soup, and were rumoured to improve the glossiness of one's hair.[2]

History

When trying to persuade Professor Severus Snape to attend Rubeus Hagrid's suprise birthday party in 1984 by gifting him potion ingredients, Jacob's sibling found dried nettles in the Artefact Room at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry with help from Ben Copper and Penny Haywood.[3] Nettles were covered in Third year Herbology lessons at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1986–1987 school year.[4]

Behind the scenes

  • Nettle may refer to several species of plants of the genus Urtica in the Urticaceae family, though Wonderbook: Book of Potions explicitly identifies the variety used in potion-making as Urtica dioica. Historically, healing properties were attributed to nettle, and it was included in the Nine Herbs Charm of the Anglo-Saxons.[5]
