A newt tail was the tail of a newt, which was supposedly a protective device which protected the owner against the Dark Arts.[1]
History[]
In late 1992, a roaring trade in protective devices flourished at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry under the noses of teachers, in response to the opening of the Chamber of Secrets, which was resulting in individuals being petrified. Second-year Neville Longbottom brought a rotten newt tail, alongside a pointed purple crystal and evil-smelling green onion for protection; when his fellow Gryffindor boys informed him that as a pure-blood, he was unlikely to be attacked, he responded that his poor magical skills made him almost a Squib.[1]
By 1996, there was a global shortage of newt tails in response to rising fear resulting from the breakout of multiple Death Eaters from Azkaban.[2]
