This female Zouwu belonged to Newton Scamander, a well-known Magizoologist, in the early 20th century. She formerly belonged to the Circus Arcanus.
Biography[]
Circus Arcanus[]
The Zouwu was part of Skender's wizarding circus and freak show, Circus Arcanus. Skender kept her in a cage and mistreated her.[1] In 1926, the circus brought her to visit New York.[2] In 1927, when Credence Barebone created turbulence in the circus, the Zouwu seized the opportunity to escape. After fleeing from the circus, she wandered around Paris, causing confusion and fear to those watching.[1]
Under Newt Scamander's care[]
Newt Scamander encountered the Zouwu.
After breaking out from Yusuf Kama's hideout, Newt Scamander eventually found the Zouwu in Paris. Newt was able to lure her into his magical suitcase using a cat bird toy. In Newt's suitcase, he treated her injuries with Dittany and used the Revulsion Jinx to free her from her chains.[1]
To find the real identity of Credence Barebone, Newt and Tina sneaked into the French Ministry of Magic, where they met Leta Lestrange. At the same moment, Melusine, a French Ministry employee, led her Matagots to attack the three of them. They fled into the Records Room, where Newt called his Zouwu to rescue them from the Matagots and the Ministry. She eventually brought Newt, Tina, Leta, and three Matagots to Cimetière du Père-Lachaise via Apparition. After that, she returned into the case after being lured with the cat bird toy by Tina.[1]
Reunion with Skender[]

After Newt's suitcase was stolen by Burgle on Skender's orders, Skender eagerly returned to the Circus Arcanus, ready to revive the show with the suitcase's contents. Setting the suitcase atop a box, he briefly left on business. However, during his absence, Gwenlyn Jenkins, the circus's Squib worker, discovered the suitcase. Curious, she opened it and entered its vast interior, where she came face-to-face with the magical beasts, including the Zouwu who had once escaped the circus.[3]
The Zouwu regarded Jenkins with curiosity, and the two bonded. Afterwards, Skender followed into the case, and, upon seeing him, the Zouwu threatened him and prepared to attack. The confrontation distracted Skender just long enough for Newt to arrive and reclaim his stolen suitcase.[3]
