- "Restores the drinker's sight and ends the effects of the Conjunctivitis Curse."
- — Harry Potter's description of this potion[src]
The Oculus Potion was a potion that restored the drinker's eyesight, including counteracting the effects of the Conjunctivitis Curse. It was a deep orange colour when completed.[1]
The ingredients to brew the potion included wormwood, Stewed Mandrake and ground unicorn horn.[2]
There existed a variation of the Conjunctivitis Curse which completely blinded the target that could not be counteracted with this potion.[3]
Recipe[]
The following recipe could be used to successfully make the Oculus Potion:
- Shake and add wormwood until the potion turns green.
- Stir the potion until it turns purple.
- Add the ground unicorn horn until the potion turns red.
- Allow the potion to heat until it turns yellow.
- Add the blue powder until the potion turns turquoise.
- Shake and add the wormwood until the potion turns pink.
- Stir until the potion turns orange.
- Add stewed mandrake until the potion turns green.
- Add the ground unicorn horn until it turns turquoise.
- Add the blue powder until it turns indigo.
- Stir until the potion turns orange.
- Heat until the potion turns purple.
- Shake and add the stewed mandrake until the potion turns orange.[4]
History[]
During the 1988–1989 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Jacob's sibling enlisted the help of Penny Haywood to brew an Oculus Potion for Andre Egwu, who had been cursed with the Conjunctivitis Curse by Brennan Doyle. Madam Pomfrey explained the potion to Jacob's sibling prior in the Hospital Wing, but commented she was unable to teach them how to brew it, as she was busy treating students.[2]
Etymology[]
"Oculus" means "eye" in latin.
Behind the scenes[]
- Considering that glasses remain prominent in the wizarding world, it seems there is no way to magically correct one's vision, and this potion only restores one's vision to where it ordinarily is.
- "Crystallised water" was said to be an ingredient in this potion in old revisions of this page by editors of the Harry Potter Wiki, despite no such name being given in the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. As Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery uses this name as well in passing dialogue, this again strongly implies that the game developers take much information verbatim from the wiki (regardless of its accuracy). There actually is no such thing as "crystallised water"; it would instead be ice, which contains no unique properties in itself and any ice would melt in a heated cauldron anyway. As this ingredient was never correct to begin with, it has no canonical grounding.
- Ground unicorn horn is also not explicitly identified in the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but is simply shown as a white powder contained in a white bottle, but was labelled as such in old wiki revisions. As Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery names this as an ingredient, this again implies the developers of the game use this wiki heavily.
