Student: "Were you expecting to be sorted into Slytherin?"
Ominis Gaunt: "Most certainly. My family on my father's side are direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin – one of the four founders of Hogwarts. Not something I'm especially proud of, mind you. He was obsessed with blood status. A pure-blood maniac. Unfortunately, most of his descendants do not fall far from that tree."
— A student and Ominis Gaunt discuss the Gaunt family legacy[src]

Ominis Gaunt's father was a Dark wizard, a member of the ancient House of Gaunt, and a direct descendant of Salazar Slytherin. He was regarded for his pure-blood supremacist views, of which his own son was ashamed.[2] He was friends with Phineas Nigellus Black, another supremacist.[7]

He was also an avid user of the Cruciatus Curse, which he taught his own children and performed on Muggles "for sport". When his son Ominis refused to perform the curse, the family tortured him, creating a large division between Ominis and the rest of his family.[6]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Chronologically, Marvolo Gaunt could be one of his elder children who tortured their little blind brother, Ominis, with the Cruciatus Curse.

Notes and references[]

  1. According to Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 10 (The House of Gaunt), "Marvolo, his son, Morfin, and his daughter, Merope, were the last of the Gaunts, a very ancient Wizarding family"; he is here speaking about Bob Ogden's visit to Gaunt Shack in the summer of 1925 (which happened "beneath a summer sky", "a few months" before Merope eloped with Tom Riddle Senior; Dumbledore also says Voldemort was born about a year after they were married, and his date of birth is given elsewhere as 31 December 1926). This means that, except for these three Gaunts, the rest of the family had been extinct in the male line by that point, and by extension, this individual had already died.
