- "But this one here, this one leads right into the cellar of Honeydukes. We've used it loads of times. And as you might've noticed, the entrance is right outside this room, through that one-eyed old crone's hump."
- — Fred and George Weasley telling Harry Potter about this passage.[src]
The One-Eyed Witch Passage was a secret tunnel that led from Hogwarts to the cellar of Honeydukes Sweetshop in Hogsmeade. Harry Potter first learned of it from Fred and George Weasley when they gave him the Marauder's Map in 1993.[1]
The passage's entrance was hidden in a statue of Gunhilda of Gorsemoor. To gain entrance to the passage, one must give the password; Dissendium. Once the password was given, the hump on the witch's statue opened to reveal a short slide into a tunnel which led under the school and took about an hour on foot to get to Hogsmeade.[1]
History[]

During the 1890–1891 school year, Garreth Weasley asked the new fifth-year student to use the passage when he needed their help stealing dried Billywig stings from the Honeydukes cellar.[2]
Before or during the 1990–1991 school year, Merula Snyde discovered a riddle scribbled in an old spellbook. She deciphered the riddle and copied it into her scrapbook, and at some point discovered the password as well. During the 1990–1991 school year, she and Jacob's sibling used this passage to sneak into Hogsmeade when access to Hogsmeade was restricted due to the vampire threat. Later, Jacob's sibling and Barnaby Lee used the passage to sneak into Hogsmeade after Merula had disappeared.[3]
Fred and George Weasley had used the passage to sneak supplies from Hogsmeade on many occasions. When they handed on the map to Harry, Harry used it to sneak into Hogsmeade on two occasions,[1] until he was seen in Hogsmeade by Draco Malfoy when his Invisibility Cloak slipped and he narrowly avoided expulsion.[4]
During the 2009–2010 school year, Daniel Page, Lottie Turner, Ivy Warrington, and another student went through this passage to go to Hogsmeade to talk to Harold's portrait.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the handheld versions of LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, this passage is much more elaborate than the simple straight passage of the books, being set up more like a maze and containing many fake walls leading to side areas.
- Hogwarts Legacy also changes the straight passage into a more complex path in the Side Quest, 'Dissending' for Sweets. When the player enters the passage, they reach a broken lift. When they repair it, they descend it. They also have to levitate wooden blocks to climb and get across bridges.
- In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, after the completion of the special adventure "THE VAMPIRE OF HOGSMEADE", the One-Eye witch statue is unlocked as a tappie.
