- "How many of you have served in the First World War? A show of hands will suffice. No one? Ah, perhaps you were too young to enlist. Time does fly, doesn't it? Much like owls, acutally. Which brings me to today's lesson on the owl airforce! It may sound unbelievable, but owls contributed a great deal to the war effort."
- — Professor Binns regarding the Owl Airforce to his students[src]
The Owl Airforce was an air force comprising of owls used by wizards during the First World War with great success. The use of owls for the air force was preferred to Ukrainian Ironbellies, which had also been tested with limited success.[2]
History[]
As Archer Evermonde, the Minister for Magic at the time of the First World War, forbade any wizards from participating, it is possible that the Owl Airforce was underground support, as it is known that some wizards did lend support to the war effort regardless of Evermonde's law.[3]
Simon Dentata wrote a book on their engagements during the war.[4][2] Their impact was taught in History of Magic classes to sixth year students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by Professor Cuthbert Binns, in the 1989–1990 school year.[2]
