"—You gotta try the paczki, okay, it’s my grandmother’s recipe, the orange zest—just—"
Jacob Kowalski describing the paczki[src]

A paczki[2] (pronounced pawntch-key)[3] is a Polish doughnut filled with orange zest and cream filling.[4]

History[]

Jacob with Pączki

Sometime in her life time, Jacob Kowalski's grandmother made paczkis and gave Jacob her recipes on how to make them.[2]

In late 1926, Jacob Kowalski offered Gilbert Bingley a paczki in lieu of collateral for a loan to open up a bakery. Though Jacob didn't have money for the collateral, he had hoped that the quality of the potential product might persuade Bingley that the business would be successful. However, he was denied.[2]

Once Jacob opened up his bakery, he sold paczkis for 2 cents each.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the real-world, the name of the pastry is written as "pączki", with the singular form being "pączek".[4]
  • In the Polish edition, "doughnuts" are translated as "pączki".[5]
