- "It happened very suddenly. The hook-nosed teacher looked past Quirrell's turban straight into Harry's eyes – and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on Harry’s forehead."

Pain having been extracted by Isidora Morganach
Pain is an unpleasant sensation caused in organic beings by intense or damaging stimuli.[1]
In the wizarding world[]
In the Tudor period, Isidora Morganach created a spell which had the power to extract pain from individuals, leaving them healthier but also more emotionally detached. When extracted, the physical manifestation of pain was red-coloured and was pulsating and uncontrollable in nature, needing to be stored in goblin-made repositories to prevent leaking into the wider world. She could also enhance her magic by inhaling the strands of pain. This form of magic was considered dangerous by the Keepers, who fundamentally believed that each human had to be able to experience pain, resulting in her eventual death at the hands of San Bakar.[2]
A number of spells could cause excruciating pain, such as the Cruciatus Curse,[3] Sectumsempra,[4] and Victor Rookwood's curse.[5] Notably, the Killing Curse did not create any pain, and was considered "quicker and easier than falling asleep" by Sirius Black.[6]
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Harry Potter felt a great amount of pain from the scar on his forehead whenever he recollected the events of his parents' deaths, or came into close proximity with Lord Voldemort, as the scar contained the fragment of Voldemort's soul which was trying to escape. This pain ultimately dissipated after Voldemort's defeat on 2 May 1998, after which the scar did not hurt Harry again.[7]
Wizarding masters would sometimes instruct their house-elves to endure pain as a punishment, such as when Lucius Malfoy ordered Dobby to iron his hands.[8]
