"She was quite an extraordinary witch, but she did like to experiment...and one day, one of her spells went badly wrong. I was nine."
Luna Lovegood discussing her mother with Harry Potter[src]

Mrs. Lovegood was a witch who was married to Xenophilius Lovegood, the editor of The Quibbler, and with him had one child, Luna Lovegood. She died in 1990, when Luna was nine.

Biography

According to her daughter, Mrs. Lovegood was an extraordinary witch who liked to experiment with spells. One day in 1990, one of her spell experiments went wrong, killing her in front of Luna, who was subsequently able to see Thestrals. Her death was apparently very gory

Luna told Harry Potter that she continued to feel sad about her mother's death for time to time, and believed that she would see her again after death.[1]

Luna has a picture of her and her mother hugging in her room at home. In the picture, she is described as looking very much like her daughter. Many years after her death, Mrs. Lovegood would gain grandchildren in Lorcan and Lysander Scamander, the sons of Luna and Rolf Scamander.[2]
