A pen is a tool that dispenses ink for writing or drawing.[1] In the wizarding world, pens were described as quills with automatic ink.[2]
Pens and quills[]
The quill and pen were used in the wizarding and Muggle worlds respectively. Wizards favoured the traditional quill, while Muggles prefer the convenience and portability of the modern pen.[2]
Quills, though visually appealing, were often fraught with practical challenges. They proved difficult for left-handed users, they needed regular sharpening, and the user had to continually and constantly dip it into an ink pot. The ink pot getting knocked over and spilling everywhere was also a frequent issue, and the ink pot was almost certain to break if it got dropped. By contrast, ballpoint pens offered a more convenient solution; a pen had a consistent automatic ink flow from its own internal ink supply, they almost never broke or spilled, and they didn't require any maintenance. All that, in addition to their compact design, pens proved to be far more practical for daily use than quills.[2]
