- "You see, knowledge is the ultimate power, but power in the wrong hands, leads to dangerous consequences."
- — Peregrine's beliefs about knowledge and power[src]
Peregrine, known as R, was a wizard and the father of Jacob and Jacob's sibling, who was the leader of the Dark wizard cabal "R".[3]
Biography[]
Early life[]
Peregrine was born into a family of unknown wizarding descent sometime before 1945.[9] Peregrine at some point purchased a hornbeam wand with a dragon heartstring core from Garrick Ollivander in his shop.[5] Peregrine attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and had fond memories of his time there,[8] having been member of the same House as his children would eventually be Sorted into. Always interested in finding the truth in myths, it was known that he put together a 'treasure hunting' team, and was, despite a rebellious streak, always well-liked by his professors, as he was a dedicated student and often helped tutor less accomplished peers. At one point, he let a Manticore loose on the Hogwarts Quidditch pitch. It was even said that the former caretaker Apollyon Pringle, who didn't like anyone, was fond of Peregrine. According to Albus Dumbledore, Peregrine was also particularly gifted in Transfiguration. A charismatic young wizard, while a student, Peregrine was said to have been able to talk his way out of nearly anything, and to have been both a Prefect and Head Boy during his time at Hogwarts.[4] At the end of the day, he knew that he would always have his family by his side.[10]
Later life[]
- "And so, I know I've been absent but the reasons are rather dull and commonplace... certainly not evil. I'm still a tracker by trade, finding missing treasured items for the wizarding community. Travelling for work took me far from home far too often... That's why your mother and I split up while you and Jacob were little."
- — Peregrine explaining his job to his younger child[src]
After he graduated from Hogwarts, Peregrine became a tracker by trade, finding missing treasured items for the wizarding community. He eventually married his wife and became the devoted husband and father of two children, whom he would give piggyback rides up their house's foyer stairs and entertain by doing all the voices when he read to his children from The Toadstool Tales. He and his wife would dance in the kitchen, and his youngest child would love to watch them. He also tried to instil his own love of adventure in his children; having at one point set up a pretend expedition for his two children and hid a treasure in the house, to which he only gave his youngest a torn piece of the map as the only clue.[4]
- Jacob's sibling: "I didn't know you were in the Wizarding War..."
- Peregrine: "Talking about my friends that were used as cannon fodder for the Ministry isn't the best dinner conversation."
- — Peregrine regarding his involvement in the First Wizarding War[src]
At some point, he participated in the First Wizarding War. His friends that he grew up were ill-prepared and died during the war. He almost lost his wife and he was terrified.[10] Travelling for work also took him from home far too often, and for long periods of time; and while it worked for a while - it was noted that before he left for a trip, he would stay up late reading books to his youngest child, and that whenever he returned home, he always brought back trinkets from his adventures - his frequent absences ultimately put a strain on their marriage, and eventually caused him to split with his wife when their children were little.[7] He claimed to have found Dai Ryusaki's amulet at the bottom of the Arabian Sea, where it was lost for decades. He eventually found other Ryusaki artefacts and added them to his collection.[11]
Joining the Cabal[]
Having gotten so wrapped up in his career, Peregrine eventually lost touch with his former wife and two children. He never meant to disappear on his children entirely, but that was nevertheless what he ended up doing, which he deeply regretted. He later joined 'R', and eventually became its leader. According to him, the reason 'R' went after the Cursed Vaults was to find his son, Jacob. He claimed that "R"'s intentions were not nefearious, with the organisation instead being committed to the pursuit of knowledge, truth and justice, and it was opposed to the corrupt British Ministry of Magic who wanted to slander them.[7]
1990–1991 school year[]

- "Hello, [Jacob's sibling]. I'm sorry I've been gone so long. It's good to see you again... [daughter/son]."
- — Peregrine greeting his youngest child[src]
During the 1990–1991 school year, Peregrine introduced himself to his youngest child in the Shrieking Shack, where they were shocked to see after so long, and that he was really the leader of "R".[3] He spoke with them downstairs, explaining to them why he had left them and the family, hoping for understanding.[7]
Peregrine then arranged to have an awkward dinner with both his children in the Leaky Cauldron. During the dinner, Jacob accused Peregrine of trying to instigate a rivalry between him and his sibling. However, he claimed he loved both his children equally.[8] Soon after, Merula Snyde vindictively revealed to the Circle of Khanna that Jacob's sibling's father was the leader of 'R', as they had informed the group of Merula's kidnapping of Corey which left the group in shock and disbelief.[12]
Peregrine later visited Albus Dumbledore in his office, and when Jacob's sibling went to talk to the Headmaster, he offered to take his child on a trip outside Hogwarts. They went to the Three Broomsticks Inn, in which they mused over lost time they could have spent together and the intention of 'R'. He reacted aggressively towards Rosmerta eavesdropping on them, making her drop two mugs of Butterbeer. They also went to Hogsmeade station and sat on a bench talking about their past memories of each other.[4]
Dumbledore wrote to Peregrine after their younger child attempted to break into Olivia Green's office at Hogwarts.[13] He invited both his children to dinner in the Three Broomsticks Inn, where he asked his younger child why they attempted their break-in. He was indignant at the misdeed of rewriting memories and thought of his damaged legacy, but he later changed his demeanour after Jacob snapped at him, saying he was proud that they wanted to seek the truth. He also remembered how his bedtime stories for his children were impressive, and how their mother dismissed them as over-exaggerated. As their younger child left, Jacob told his father some of his own stories.[14]
Peregrine met again with their younger child in the Three Broomsticks Inn, this time to discuss "R"'s plans. Peregrine confessed that they planned to use mind control to rid the Ministry of corrupt officials. He again called upon his child to join 'R' as their true calling, but they refused him again. He responded that they would eventually change their mind.[15] He later met the Circle of Khanna without Jacob's sibling in the inn, where he engaged in friendly and lively conversation with them. Jacob's sibling came upon the meeting, and wondered why their friends were so comfortable around him.[16] After the incident, Peregrine spoke with their child outside the inn in Hogsmeade, where they asked their father as to why they intruded upon what was supposed to be a private meeting with their friends. Peregrine simply told them he was looking out for them, and said he was pleased to see that they had such good friends. When asked about why he thought the Ministry was corrupt, he said he was a veteran of the First Wizarding War and that his friends died in the war, used as cannon fodder by the Ministry.[10]
He then voiced his anger about how Death Eaters still worked in the Ministry, such as Lucius Malfoy and Walden Macnair, and how the Ministry had let off Igor Karkaroff in exchange for Augustus Rookwood's name (a Ministry Unspeakable). He then told them he simply needed a Legilimens (them) to finalise his plan.[10] Fearing he was in danger, their child told them the truth about Ryusaki's intentions in the Leaky Cauldron. However, as they had read the information from the Ministry of Magic Archives, he was sceptical, suspecting it was false information from the corrupt Ministry. Before leaving, he reminded them that they would need to decide to join 'R' or not before their graduation. They also noticed him wearing an amulet that was worn by Dai Ryusaki when he died, which had a habit of turning decent wizards to the Dark Arts.[5]
When their younger child went to warn him in the Three Broomsticks Inn about the amulet, he dismissed their concerns, telling them that he had examined the artefact for any curses and the information they obtained from the Ministry was possibly false. He let his children examine the amulet, and they did not seem to think it felt cursed.[11]
- Peregrine: "Friends and family, I welcome you to the dawn of a new age for wizardkind! In today's demonstration, I will show you the true power of the mind... unleashed!"
- Jacob's sibling: "Dad, please stop! What you're doing is dangerous! There are too many unknown factors, too many risks..."
- Peregrine: "There's no need for concern. You and Jacob are my children! Do you really think I would let Jacob, my own son, be part of this test if I thought something bad would happen?"
- — Peregrine announcing his mind control experiment[src]
Later in the Shrieking Shack, Peregrine had Jacob wear the Crown of Mneme and take Dai Ryusaki's mind-enhancing potion to enhance his Legilimency, so he could demonstrate mind control. Jacob's sibling, Merula and one of their friends (either Penny Haywood, Barnaby Lee or Talbott Winger) tried to distract them and take the Crown, but he outsmarted them and paralysed their friend with the Full Body-Bind Curse, deciding that they would be Jacob's test subject. He was also displeased to see that their child would betray him, but he could see that they were still not supportive of his cause. He finished the mind-enhancing potion that Verucca had brewed using a wand. He then had Jacob wear the Crown and take the potion to control their mind, refusing him to remove it even when the curse affecting began to pain him. He fanatically proclaimed that mind control was needed to take down the Ministry and avenge Dai's wrongful death. Their younger child realised he was under the curse of Ryusaki's amulet. After Jacob did remove it, he insisted his younger child wear it instead, but they knocked it away under a piano with wandless magic, allowing Jacob to Apparate the three of them to safety.[6]
After this incident, Jacob's sibling informed Professor Dumbledore of their father's action. Despite them telling Dumbledore that he was cursed, Dumbledore informed them that Peregrine would have to face punishment for his crimes.[17]
After the experiment, Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde spoke with Jacob's sibling in Knockturn Alley, where she told them of how Peregrine's personality had negatively changed, not being the person she once knew. She saw his experiment as extreme and that his reckless actions endangered the whole organisation. Jacob's sibling informed her that Peregrine was cursed, and she told them that they would need to steal the amulet from him to return him to normal, but only with her help.[18]
Peregrine later met with Verucca in Knockturn Alley, blaming her for the failure of their experiment with the Crown of Mneme. Unbeknownst to him, this was part of a plan in which his younger child attempted to steal the amulet from him under their Invisibility Cloak, which he realised and foiled by knocking them over with the Banishing Charm. Verucca then took matters into her own hands and cast the Conjunctivitis Curse at Peregrine, which Jacob intercepted and was knocked out. Upon learning that his son was rendered blind as a result, he swore vengeance against Verucca.[19]
Fall off the Viaduct[]
Intent on replicating the experiment, he led an infiltration at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to capture an experienced Legilimens (probably Severus Snape) on 22 June 1991, the anniversary of Dai Ryusaki's death. They were confronted by his younger child alongside the Circle of Khanna at the Viaduct bridge at Hogwarts, where they asked him once more to hand over the amulet, to which he refused. With no other choice, the students and the Dark wizards then started duelling each other for a final showdown, during which Peregrine found himself facing his younger child and Ben Copper. While the seventh-year Hogwarts students overpowered all the adult Dark wizards and witches, Peregrine was able to fight long enough to blind everyone with a bright spell and ran towards Hogwarts, with his younger child giving chase.
However, they were suddenly met with Verucca and her niece Merula Snyde at the Viaduct, who had arrived via Apparition. Verucca informed him that she had assumed the role of the group's leader, usurping him from power, and disarmed him of his wand. His younger child stepped up to fight Verucca in a duel and defeated her, after which her niece also defected from her.[1]
In anger, Verucca denounced her niece and swore vengeance against them all, conjuring Fiendfyre after wandlessly summoning her wand. Peregrine managed to push his younger child and Merula away, which left him vulnerable to the cursed flames that Verucca soon directed towards him. Hastily climbing on the barriers of the Viaduct, he shared one last look of regret with his younger child before he fell off, where he was presumed dead because he did not have his wand.[1]
Physical description[]
Peregrine had short black hair and had the same skin tone as his children. He wore a brown jacket and a red scarf around his neck.[3]
Personality and traits[]
- "We must create peace within our world. And if we always play by the rules, we won't achieve our goal."
- — Peregrine's intentions[src]
Despite the sinister nature of his organisation, Peregrine passionately claimed he and his group were fighting for truth, justice and knowledge, against a corrupt Ministry of Magic. He also viewed breaking the law as necessary to achieve noble goals. He was also remorseful over having been separated from his children, but he wished to put things right and develop a positive relationship with them.[7] At Hogwarts, he was a known mischief-maker and talented student.[4]
Peregrine was angered at things he perceived to be profoundly unjust, such as the Ministry, in particular the fact that Death Eaters were powerful in the Ministry.[10]
However, after he was under the influence of the curse from Dai Ryusaki's amulet, his personality was altered to that of a fanatic who was willing to go to extreme, dangerous and immoral lengths to achieve his goals.[6] Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde and his younger child acknowledged this negative change of personality, with him not having been the person they once knew.[18]
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Transfiguration: Peregrine was proficient in Transfiguration and excelled at Transfiguration during his time at Hogwarts. Albus Dumbledore spoke highly of his performance in this field.[4][4]
- Charms: Peregrine was capable of producing a fully corporeal Patronus,[4] which was a mark of superior magical ability.[20]
- Potions: Peregrine gave Jacob's sibling's friends useful tips on making potions.[16] He was able to complete Dai Ryusaki's mind-enhancing potion with a powerful wand.[6]
- Apparition: Like most accomplished adult wizards and witches, Peregrine was capable of apparating successfully at will.[10]
- Dark Arts: Peregrine said he was able to examine artefacts he came into contact with for curses to ensure their safety.[11] He could also swiftly cast the Full Body-Bind Curse.[6]
- Nonverbal magic: Peregrine was able to finish Dai Ryusaki's potion without saying an incantation.[6]
Possessions[]
- Wand: He owned a hornbeam wand with a dragon heartstring core that he purchased from Garrick Ollivander.[5]
- Amulet: Peregrine owned this cursed amulet once owned by Dai Ryusaki.[5][11][6] He claimed to have found the amulet at the bottom of the Arabian Sea, where it was lost for decades.[11]
- Dark Scroll: Peregrine owned one half of the Dark Scroll.[10]
Relationships[]
Wife[]
Peregrine met his wife and mother of his children at Hogwarts.[4] However, he became estranged from her after leaving the family.
Jacob[]
He had a tense relationship with his eldest child Jacob. Jacob accused their dad of encouraging friction between him and their younger sibling, but he claimed he loved them equally.[8] He later had Jacob wear the Crown of Mneme, which was highly dangerous.[6] Despite all this, however, he did care for his oldest son, being worried enough when he was trapped in one of the Cursed Vaults to direct R into researching on them. He also was horrified when Jacob was attacked by Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde, despite earlier calling him a disappointment, and commented he almost risked everything to spy on Jacob in St Mungos, and was devastated when he learned Jacob was permanently blinded, to where he actually appeared to be close to breaking the influence of Dai Ryusaki's amulet before it took over again and made him direct his rage to Verucca, vowing to torture her to death for what she did to his son.
Younger child[]
He had a difficult relationship with his younger child. He wanted them to join "R" with him, insisting it was their destiny, but they were hesitant.[15]
