- "This is the ideal starter cauldron, as used by first-year students at Hogwarts. It's perfect for brewing a wide range of potions and carrying books to class."
- — Advert at Potage's Cauldron Shop[src]
A Pewter Cauldron was a cauldron made from pewter, a metal alloy made up of mostly tin. A Standard Size 2 Pewter Cauldron was part of the supply list for first-year students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,[3] as it was deemed the ideal cauldron for starters.[1] One could purchase a Standard Size 2 Pewter Cauldron at Potage's Cauldron Shop, for a cost of fifteen Galleons.[1] Out of the three common varieties of cauldron — copper, brass and pewter — pewter cauldrons brewed at the slowest speed.[1]
History[]
On 31 July 1991 in Diagon Alley, Harry Potter purchased one, having not been allowed to purchase a Gold Cauldron by Rubeus Hagrid, as the shopping list specifically specified Pewter.[3]
Severus Snape owned a black Pewter Cauldron during his lifetime.[4] Following Snape's murder, Horace Slughorn kept the cauldron as a keepsake.[5] During the Calamity of the late 2010s/early 2020s, a Foundable of this Pewter Cauldron had to be returned to Snape's office by members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.[4]
