Piles is the common name used to refer to the condition of swollen haemorrhoids, structures in the anus that assist in bowel control. Piles can be provoked by a variety of adverse conditions, including prolonged sitting in discomfort. Therefore, riding early 12th century broomsticks could cause piles in the rider, as reported by Guthrie Lochrin in 1107.[1]
