- Student: "You seem to think I might've heard of the 'Bath Pinch-Smedleys.' Why would I know of your family?"
- Grace Pinch-Smedley: "That's like asking why the sky is blue or grass is green. The Pinch-Smedley name is synonymous with intellectual curiosity. We are known for our contributions to science and art. I'm surprised you haven't heard of us, frankly."

Pinch-Smedley was the surname of a wizarding family in Great Britain. One of the family's branches was based in Bath. The surname was "synonymous with intellectual curiosity" and were known for their contributions to science and art. The family owned an astrolabe which was lost when Grace Pinch-Smedley's grandfather and grandmother drowned in the Black Lake, but it was retrieved in the 1890s by one of Grace's fellow students.[1]
Known members[]
- Grace Pinch-Smedley – a Slytherin student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1890s.[1]
- Grace Pinch-Smedley's father[1]
- Grace Pinch-Smedley's grandfather – an astronomer who died at the Black Lake.[1]
- Grace Pinch-Smedley's grandmother – also died at the Black Lake.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The phrase 'Bath Pinch-Smedleys' appears to be a parody of how some upper-class families refer to each other. For example, in the film Titanic (1997), Jack Dawson is asked if he is from the "Boston Dawsons". This phrasing suggests that all upper-class families are acquainted even across very distant geographical areas.
- Importantly, 'Bath Pinch-Smedley' is not Grace's actual surname, but only refers to the place her family is from within this context.
