A polecat is an animal that belongs to the Weasel family.
It is one possible corporeal form of the Patronus Charm.[1]
History
In 1473, during the final match of the first ever Quidditch World Cup between Transylvania and Flanders, a Chaser was transfigured into a polecat, a foul that had never been recorded before.[2]
At breakfast on the morning of his first Care of Magical Creatures class in September 1993, Rubeus Hagrid entered the Great Hall absentmindedly swinging a dead polecat (presumably intended to be eaten by one of the Hippogriffs that were to be the subject of the day's lesson), excited about his new teaching position.[3]
