The Potter family had a pet cat in the 1980s. It had ginger fur, a rather chubby build, and yellow eyes.

Biography[]

The cat was mentioned in Lily Potter's letter to Sirius Black that Harry had nearly killed it while flying on Sirius's birthday present to Harry, a toy broomstick.[2] It was unknown if it died when Lord Voldemort attacked the Potters, or escaped unharmed.

Behind the scenes[]

  • There is a popular theory that the Potters' cat is none other than Crookshanks, Hermione's pet cat, half-Kneazle. This is based on the fact that Crookshanks helped Sirius Black in his search for Peter Pettigrew, possibly because both Sirius and Peter frequented Potter cottage and he recognised them, both in their human and Animagus forms. And if he knew all along that Peter was the traitor, it would explain his behaviour on seeing Peter in the Magical Menagerie (which was before he met Sirius). As for him not trusting Sirius at first, it could be that, as Sirius was the one who persuaded the Potters to use Peter as Secret Keeper, that he nevertheless thought Sirius was in on the betrayal, and that it took Sirius a while to convince him otherwise. If he did not know all along that Peter was the traitor, it is likely that he learned from Sirius that Peter was the traitor, or that he somehow learned of Peter's treachery on his own. That it took some time for Sirius to communicate to him that he was after Peter could simply be due to the communication barrier between animals and humans. Other possible supporting evidence for this theory is the cat's physical appearance, according to the Potter family portrait released on Pottermore, which is very similar to that of Crookshanks. However, none of this has been confirmed by J. K. Rowling and remains mere speculation.
