Preformationism was a biological theory that was popular from the 17th century through to the 19th century.[1] It postulated that all living things developed from animalcules, complete miniature versions of the organism in question, which were held to have existed from the beginning of time.[1] The theory was eventually discredited by the genetics-based scientific understanding of the biology of reproduction.[1]
The 2085th issue of Transfiguration Today, published in 1926, featured an article entitled "Animalcules: The truth about preformationism."[2]
