Pumpkin juice was a wizarding beverage made from pumpkins. Manufactured since 1837 by London Pumpkins & Sons, it was extremely popular in the wizarding world, particularly among the students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Pumpkin juice was usually served iced and it was available on the Hogwarts Express. In addition, it was drunk on any occasion, such as for breakfast, lunch, feasts, and other special events. Pumpkin juice was also an ingredient in the experimental potion Stamina Game.

History

1920s

Pumpkin juice was readily available in both the United States of America and Great Britain throughout the 20th century. Sisters Tina and Queenie Goldstein kept pumpkin juice at their New York apartment in 1926.

In France, pumpkin juice, or "jus de citrouille", was available by 1927.

1990–1991

In Great Britain, pumpkin juice could be purchased on the Hogwarts Express, and was included with meals at Hogwarts in the Great Hall.

During the 1990–1991 school year, after the laughing curse was unleashed upon people at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, Jacob's sibling and Chiara Lobosca searched the Janus Thickey Ward for items related to Jacob that may have been cursed, where they found a bottle of pumpkin juice, which Jacob's sibling theorised could have been tampered with Alihotsy Draught. They took the bottle to Professor Snape to analyse for any traces of the potion, but he found none.

1992–1993

While flying to Hogwarts in the Flying Ford Anglia with Ron Weasley on 1 September 1992, Harry Potter ate too much toffee and began to fantasise about drinking "ice-cold pumpkin juice" from the Hogwarts Express trolley. When they crashed the car into the Whomping Willow, McGonagall made sandwiches and pumpkin juice appear on Snape's desk in his office.

Later that year, after Harry Potter had injured himself during a game of Quidditch and ended up in the Hospital Wing as a result, his friends brought him various sweet treats, including bottles of pumpkin juice.

1994–1995

In 1995, Severus Snape threatened to put some Veritaserum in Harry Potter's evening pumpkin juice to get the truth when he thought he was stealing Polyjuice Potion ingredients. However, it was actually Bartemius Crouch Junior, disguised as Alastor Moody with Polyjuice Potion, getting ingredients to keep his identity a secret. This explained why Bartemius Crouch Junior, disguised as Alastor Moody with Polyjuice Potion, had ignored his flagon of pumpkin juice at the first-night feast and drank from a flask instead — he wasn't just afraid of being poisoned like the real Moody would of, but needed to keep drinking the potion.

On 1 September 1994, during the Start-of-Term Feast for the 1994–1995 school year at Hogwarts, Hermione Granger spilled her pumpkin juice when she found out there were over one hundred house-elves living and working Hogwarts, yet she had never seen one. In 1995, she also spat out a mouthful of pumpkin juice in the Great Hall when she read a slanderous article published in the Daily Prophet about Harry Potter, written by Rita Skeeter.

In late 1994, bottles of pumpkin juice, among other treats, was served up at a party in the Gryffindor common room for Harry Potter, in order to congratulate his impressive performance in the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

In early 1995, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley took a flask of pumpkin juice, among other food items, to Sirius Black, who was hiding out secretly in a cave near Hogsmeade. During their visit, he drained the flask, showing his thirst.

1996–1997

Dolores Umbridge offered Harry Potter pumpkin juice in 1996 when she wanted to secretly administer Veritaserum to him, but he chose tea instead.

Harry Potter pretended to put the potion Felix Felicis into Ron Weasley's pumpkin juice at breakfast to give him confidence for a Quidditch match with Slytherin in sixth year, and it worked. They ended up winning the match for Gryffindor.

Pumpkin juice was among the various beverages served at the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in 1997. Bill and Fleur also served pumpkin juice to individuals keeping refuge at their home Shell Cottage in 1998.

2010s/2020s

During the Calamity of the late 2010s/early 2020s, bottles/vessels of pumpkin juice became Foundables, which had to be returned to their original place in the wizarding world by members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.

Behind the scenes

• It seems to have taken on the same role that orange juice has in the Muggle world, though orange juice is often consumed in the wizarding world as well.
