Pyrites was a character who was included in early drafts of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.[1] J. K. Rowling ultimately decided to cut him although she "quite liked him as a character."[1]

Behind the scenes

Biography

Pyrites would have been a foppish Death Eater who wore white silk gloves.[1] He would have met Sirius Black outside James and Lily Potter's home in Godric's Hollow on the night that the couple were murdered by Voldemort.[1]

Etymology

Pyrite is a shiny yellow mineral that typically forms in clusters of cubic crystals. Due to its resemblance to gold, pyrite is also known as fool's gold, which is probably why Rowling chose it as a name for this showy but sinister character.
