The Python Mercury was a dragon representing the alchemical symbol of mercury.

Physical description[]

It was represented as a large chimeric dragon with a scaled body and a long tail that curled into three heads above its body. It had two humanoid feet, with small wings on its ankles, and a large man's face with a long beard on the front of its body. It also had two wings on the sides of its body.[1]

History[]

In 1992, Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger saw an image of this creature in the book Moste Potente Potions while they were reading about the Polyjuice Potion.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

  • This creature first appeared in the book Il Metamorfosi metallico et humano, written by Nazari Giovanni Battista. The three heads of the dragon represent the three central alchemical elements of transmutation according to Paracelsus: mercury, salt and sulphur, forming the so-called "tria prima".[3]
  • In Greek tradition, the creature represents the mystagogue, the Greek priest responsible for initiation into the mysteries of religion, rites and ceremonies.[4]
  • It is uncertain whether the creature really exists or is just a mythological figure, so its classification is also uncertain, possibly classified as a Beast (if it exists).
  • The use of this figure on the Polyjuice Potion page may be linked to the fact that the Python Mercury is the symbol of human transmutation.
