This incident was a failed attack on Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by a Dementor. It was orchestrated by the unidentified organisation known simply as "R" during the search for the Cursed Vaults.[1]
History[]

During the 1987–1988 school year, R sent a message transfigured as a black quill to one of their allies, giving them the test of attacking Hogwarts School. This message was found by Ben Copper and Jacob's sibling in the Artefact Room. Jacob's sibling immediately went to the Headmaster's Office and told Professor Albus Dumbledore and the four Heads of House about their discovery.[1]
Shortly afterwards, Penny Haywood was found unconscious on the Training Grounds by Professor Minerva McGonagall, and was brought to the Hospital Wing, where she was visited by Jacob's sibling and Nymphadora Tonks. She told her friends that she could not remember exact details of what had happened, but recalled a cold feeling.[1]

Tonks and Jacob's sibling inspected the Training Grounds. There, they found out that R planned to attack Hogwarts with Dementors, When Jacob's sibling encountered one, they were unable to defend themselves. Tonks came to to help them and chased the Dementor away with her corporeal jack rabbit Patronus. Unwilling at first, she eventually agreed to teach them the highly complicated and advanced Patronus Charm.[1]
To practise their focus, they went to Zonko's Joke Shop in Hogsmeade, as Tonks thought concentrating while playing a trick was a good idea. They bought Belch Powder and added it to the Butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks Inn. They also found a message to R, informing them of what had happened so far.[1]
Tonks and Jacob's sibling returned to Hogwarts and started their training. They were interrupted by Merula Snyde, who also wanted to learn the charm. Tonks instructed them to go the library to study the theory of the Patronus. Afterwards, they met in the Great Hall to think about what happy memories they would use to summon their Patronuses.[1]
When they first attempted to cast the charm on the Training grounds, nothing happened when Merula tried it and Jacob's sibling was able to conjure a non-corporeal Patronus on their first attempt. They asked Professor McGonagall for help. After talking about what distracted their focus, Professor McGonagall informed Jacob's sibling that Professor Dumbledore wanted to see them.[1]

After taking advice from Professor Dumbledore, Jacob's sibling found out that Merula had been looking for the Dementor on her own without having mastered the charm. Tonks found them and informed them that the Dementor had been seen on the Training Grounds. Merula finally admitted that she feared not be worthy to conjure a Patronus, directly before the Dementor approached them. She was able to conjure a non-corporeal Patronus, while Jacob's sibling and Tonks conjured corporeal Patronuses, which banished the Dementor from Hogwarts.[1]
