Ranrok's goblin rebellion was a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok that took place throughout the late 1880s[2] until its conclusion in 1891.[1][3] Throughout his campaign, Ranrok made an uneasy alliance with the Rookwood Gang, a criminal faction of Dark wizards led by Victor Rookwood, Europe's most powerful wizard criminal at the time.[4][9]

The earliest known event within the rebellion was the attack on Feldcroft in the late 1880s, which saw the cursing of Anne Sallow at the hands of Victor Rookwood.[2][6] While Rookwood's goals were at first profit-oriented,[9] Ranrok sought to supplant wizardkind with goblinkind as the dominant magical race, as well as acquiring wands for his species.[7] To accomplish this, he investigated the history of Isidora Morganach and the Keepers, as well as the subject of ancient magic as a whole, to track down the final repository, a store of ancient magic buried beneath Hogwarts Castle.[10][7] Ranrok built large drills to penetrate the base of the Castle and steal the Repository, which he successfully did in 1891.[3]

Concurrent to the rebellion, Professor Eleazar Fig and his student, who had the ability to control ancient magic, led an independent mission to actualise his student's potential.[5] With the aid of the Keepers, they managed to defeat Victor Rookwood in a duel,[7] as well as defeating Ranrok himself in a battle for the final repository, where they were helped by multiple Hogwarts professors.[3]

The rebellion received little awareness from the British Ministry of Magic, who were oblivious to its true gravity.[11][12] Meanwhile, The Daily Prophet also treated it as a rumour.[11]

Background[]

Isidora Morganach was a Dark witch and a wielder of ancient magic in the 15th16th century. She used a repository constructed by Bragbor, Ranrok's ancestor, made of goblin silver, to store "pain" from Hogwarts students.[13] By the time Isidora died, the energy stored within the repository was so great that it had to be contained by the Keepers.[3] The Keepers developed trials so that if anyone in the future also wielded ancient magic, they would have to prove themselves before the Keepers' Caverns, which held the power source, could be opened.[13][14][15][3] By the 1890s, this individual presented themselves in the form of a Hogwarts student.[11]

Ranrok had heard of Isidora's legacy and acquired an interest in the power source, desperate to supplant wizardkind with goblins.[7] Thus began Ranrok's own quest to unlock the repository, concurrent to the student's quest to prove himself worthy enough to defend it. The student was supported by Eleazar Fig in his journey to pass the Keepers' trials.[5]

Timeline of events[]

Raid on Feldcroft[]

In the late 1880s, Victor Rookwood and Ranrok acquired a mutual interest in Isidora Morganach's estate.[3] They attacked the village of Feldcroft, where it was located, causing Anne Sallow to rush out to help the wounded. She was cursed by Rookwood, who uttered "children should be seen and not heard", and bore the scars of the curse for many years after.[2]

In the 1890s, rebellion steadily caused concern in the wizarding world with opinions differing to how big of a threat Ranrok was. George Osric had difficulties persuading the British Ministry of Magic to be aware of how dangerous Ranrok was.[11]

Attack on Eleazar Fig and George Osric[]

On 1 September 1890, in his determination to acquire the Vault 12 key, Ranrok unleashed a possessed dragon on the carriage that held the new fifth-year student, Eleazar Fig, and George Osric. The attack resulted in the death of Osric, but the escape of all other parties.[11]

Also on 1 September 1890, some time after the carriage attack, Ranrok found his way into Vault 12 through the machinations of a Gringotts Guard who was loyal to him. There, he found the new student with Eleazar Fig. Although Ranrok personally murdered a banker during the attack, he was himself subdued by a Pensieve Guardian before he could manage to apprehend Fig or the student.[11]

Troll attack on Hogsmeade[]

On 2 September 1890, Ranrok partnered with Victor Rookwood to unleash two trolls into the village of Hogsmeade with the hope of creating a distraction.[16]

Victor Rookwood's last stand[]

This duel between the new student and Victor Rookwood, one of Ranrok's defected allies, saw the demise of the Rookwood Gang and the death of Victor Rookwood himself.[6]

Battle for the final repository[]

Near the end of the 1890–1891 school year, this was the final battle between Ranrok's Loyalists and the fifth-year student, who was fighting alongside the professors of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The battle took place in the Keepers' Caverns beneath the school, and was focused solely on controlling the final repository, a major source of ancient magical power that had been constructed by Isidora Morganach and Bragbor the Boastful centuries before.[3]
