- "You have a wide set of skills and a proven track record for breaking difficult curses. Those are the kinds of things that the ROCC is looking for. People who can solve the unsolvable."
- — Alastor Moody[src]
The Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division (ROCC) was a secretive division of the British Ministry of Magic that got referred difficult-to-solve cases from other divisions within the Ministry. The ROCC operated largely outside the control of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement; ROCC recruits were not dedicated to a single area of expertise owing to the nature of its cases.[5] ROCC employees claimed to work for the Magical Maintenance Department as cover.[1]
The ROCC utilised Nifflers that had skills far beyond that of a normal Niffler, such as sniffing all sorts of things out, surveillance and reconnaissance and perhaps even some defence.[6]
Description[]
Entrance to the division was gained by placing a Portkey in the form of a trainer in a purple rubbish bin in a dark London alleyway, with someone's Ministry of Magic Identity Card placed within the trainer.[1]
The headquarters were expansive with an Art Deco style and contained mysterious doors that could not be entered. It also had a large globe, held by a statue of the Titan Atlas from Greek mythology, that showed all open ROCC cases around the world.[1]
It had a Break Room, where ROCC agents could relax, have snacks and hold parties. It contained a mysterious freezer. It also had a pet lounge.[1]
History[]
Upon their graduation from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the summer of 1991, Jacob's sibling was recruited by Auror Alastor Moody to join the ROCC.[5]
They entered the ROCC headquarters for the first time in September that year when Moody directed them to a Portkey in a dark London alleyway in the form of a purple trainer in a rubbish bin. The Portkey was activated when they placed their Ministry ID card inside it. Upon entering ROCC, they were immediately acquainted with Ruby Honeysuckle, an American witch who had graduated from Ilvermorny was had emigrated to Great Britain to work for the Ministry. The two of them later met with Olivia Green, Jacob's sibling former Hogwarts professor and Callum McClintock.[1]
