The Ravine[1] was a deep narrow gorge in the Hogwarts Grounds that divided the Castle in two sections. The Covered Bridge, Viaduct, Stone Bridge and Suspension Bridges spanned this gorge.
In the 19th century, the Ravine contained water.[2] However, by the 1990s, this water appeared to have dried up.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the second part of the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Viaduct present in the previous films is absent, and the stone walkway connecting the Entrance Courtyard and The Quad is extended to the Viaduct Entrance.
- In the second part of the film adaption of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Ravine is Fenrir Greyback's place of death.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Harry Potter and Voldemort both jumped off the Quad. However, Voldemort managed to Apparate them both, crashing through towers, and coming to crash-land in the Entrance Courtyard. As this scene contradicts the books it is not considered canon.
