- — Renka to Abigail Grey on werewolves in Hogsmeade[src]
Renka Rabblehauser[6] was a witch and an activist against werewolves.
Biography[]
In her youth, Renka attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where she was Sorted into Ravenclaw house.[2]
In the early 21st century, Renka owned a shop where she sold handmade house-elf figurines in Hogsmeade. However, they were considered creepy by other residents and, in September 2010, it ran out of business.[5] On the day she closed her shop, Renka took a box of figurines into the street and began smashing them on the ground, yelling at anyone who passed that they were to blame for her failure. Pieces of tiny porcelain House-elves can still be found lodged between the cobblestones.[7]
In December 2010, Renka was protesting on the streets of Hogsmeade against werewolves. She thought they were dangerous and held them responsible for the recent problems in the village, including the lights suddenly going on and off, the mist that kept sweeping in and break-ins. She was also putting up posters around the village warning everyone about the danger they posed.[4]
Renka had a crowd of villagers listening to her when Abigail Grey, a student of Hogwarts, confronted her. She disagreed with her and pointed out they were not "mindless beasts" or the villains she painted them out to be. Even though Abigail told her werewolves would not cause that kind of destruction, Renka would not change her mind and the girl ran away in tears. Another student had tried to help Abigail, but Renka wrote them both off as naive Hogwarts students.[4]
Later on, Renka tried to put her posters up in the Three Broomsticks Inn. Rosmerta demanded that she take the posters down, calling them filth. Renka was not happy and tried to argue with her. Aberforth Dumbledore intervened and told her they didn't want to hear her fear-mongering. Renka stormed out of the pub in anger.[4]
One day, Renka was standing by the Christmas tree in Hogsmeade's square when she walked forward and bumped into the student. They apologised but Renka didn't accept their apology, responding very rudely that Hogwarts students liked to strut around the village like it was their playground. They told her that they didn't think that but Renka shouted they were looking for trouble. She told them to stay out of her way before running off.[8]
One night, Renka was supposedly in her closed shop when she claimed she was attacked by a thief. The same thief went on a spree of break-ins in Hogsmeade that night, for which Renka continued to hold werewolves responsible. The next day, she had a rally in the village where she told those listening that they had to rid the woods of the beasts for good.[5]
When Abigail and her friend returned to the village, they tried to defend werewolves again, but she mocked them for being safe in their castle while the townsfolk suffered. The student argued that werewolves weren't evil and they couldn't control it. Renka agreed that they were mindless beasts, but Abigail pointed out that wasn't what they were saying. After telling her that werewolves were people who were victims of disease who could control it with the right potions, Renka wondered why she cared so much about werewolves.[5]
They decided to leave, but Renka told them that they should return to their castle and leave them to sort out the werewolves. Aberforth Dumbledore then angrily confronted Renka, telling her she had made her point, that she should stop, and that everyone listening to her should go home. Renka then begrudgingly left.[5]
One evening, Renka walked in to Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop where she saw the student talking to Abigail. She remarked that she thought their ilk would be in there. When a witch and wizard with them tried to leave, the student stated they had every right to be there. Renka told them every "person" had the right, to which Abigail asked what she was implying. Renka shouted out that she thought Abigail was a werewolf too and took the pouch they had containing aconite. The student demanded it back but Renka refused because she thought it would prove what beasts they truly were.[9]
Renka was surprised when Aberforth stepped in to tell her to stop. She demanded that he stay out of it but he told her she had gone too far and now he had to get involved. He told the villagers there that they should stop listening to hatred and realise werewolves are only people, no better or worst than everyone else. After telling her they shouldn't let fear cloud their greater natures, Renka started shouting that fear had nothing to do with these beasts being dangerous who destroy everything. Abigail told her if she was referring to the break-ins, it couldn't have been the werewolves because they didn't happen during a full moon. After accusing her of trying to frame werewolves, Renka was angered. She claimed she would never do that and that she knew Abigail was a werewolf who was trying to protect her "mangey" friends. Renka was shocked when Abigail told her the only mangey things were her house-elf figurines. Renka then ran off saying that they would be sorry. Her supporters left with her which caused Madam Puddifoot to worry about her empty tables.[9]
One evening, she stalked the student while they were helping their friends, Robyn Thistlethwaite and Kevin Farrell find each other in the village.[10]
On the night of the full moon, the Wolfsbane Potion that the pack drank didn't work as expected and the werewolves ran rampant on Hogsmeade. Aberforth and the student tried to stop them with the Incarcerous Spell, but Renka showed up in disguise and released the bindings. The student followed Renka to her shop and told her that they knew that she switched the ingredients on the day at the tea shop. Renka admired their cleverness and dared them to survive that night. After the student found the evidence of her involvement with the break-ins, Renka tried to use the Memory Charm on them, but was stopped by the transformed Abigail. Renka begged Abigail not to hurt her, and Abigail let her go.[11]
The next morning, Renka gathered the residents of Hogsmeade and accused the werewolves reunited at the Hog's Head Inn of having attacked and infected innocent people the night before. When the student revealed that no one died nor turned, Renka erupted into accusations of them being werewolves and that they had to be exterminated. The student also revealed that the evidence of the break-ins was all in Renka's shop, and that she sabotaged the Wolfsbane Potion that could have prevented the attack. When the people around Renka started doubting her, she accused Abigail of nearly killing her, but Abigail replied that she wouldn't pass the curse to anyone, even someone like her. Renka tried once again to prove werewolves were dangerous and aimed her wand at Abigail, but Aberforth disarmed her, ending her attempts.[11]
Aberforth and the other residents found the evidence mentioned by the student at Renka's shop, and Renka was arrested and taken away.[11]
