- "Nobody really liked Care of Magical Creatures, which, after the action-packed first class, had become extremely dull. Hagrid seemed to have lost his confidence. They were now spending lesson after lesson learning how to look after Flobberworms, which had to be some of the most boring creatures in existence."
- — Flobberworms were used by Rubeus Hagrid to teach students[src]
These Flobberworms belonged to Rubeus Hagrid, a half-giant who taught Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1990s. Many of them eventually died from overeating.
History[]
After losing his nerve during the Hippogriff debacle in his first Care of Magical Creatures lesson during the 1993–1994 school year, Rubeus Hagrid had his third year students raise his Flobberworms for a term. The exercise was completely pointless, as they prefered to be left alone to do nothing. They didn't require much care, although they seemed unable to control how much food they needed, as they would die if overfed.[1] Later on in the school year, the Flobberworms died from overeating lettuce.[2]
During the third-year exam for Care of Magical Creatures, Hagrid provided a fresh tub of Flobberworms for the class and had them keep them alive for one hour in order to pass the exam.[3]
During the 2010–2011 school year, Daniel Page, who needed some Flobberworm Mucus to use to brew a Sleeping Draught, went along with a Muggle-born student to ask Rubeus Hagrid if he could give them some mucus from his Flobberworms. After Daniel and his friend helped Hagrid collect Dittany to brew Essence of Dittany to help heal the Hippogriff Teartalon and fought off the forest troll that initially attacked her, Hagrid gave them the mucus they needed. It is unknown if these Flobberworms were part of the same batch from the 1993-1994 school year or if they were yet another new batch.[4]
