A crossbow was a weapon that belonged to Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant gamekeeper at Hogwarts. It served as Hagrid's primary weapon, as his wand had been broken when he was expelled from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 1943.
History[]
At the end of the 1987–1988 school year, Hagrid's presence with his crossbow drove away the Acromantulas that were attacking Jacob's sibling and Charlie Weasley.[1]
He would sometimes keep it outside next to his door.[2] He often carried it for protection when making trips into the Forbidden Forest, such as in spring of 1992 when he took Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Draco to help look for an injured unicorn in the forest for their detention.[3]
He answered the door with it in May 1993 when Harry and Ron went to visit him after Hermione was Petrified by a Basilisk.[4]
In 1995, he was carrying it when Albus Dumbledore asked him to go and fetch Igor Karkaroff after Viktor Krum was attacked.[5]
He also had it in the spring of 1996 when he took Harry and Hermione to meet his half-brother, Grawp.[6]
On 1 March 1997, he carried it with him into the Hospital Wing to visit Ron after he was mistakenly poisoned. It was broken shortly thereafter when Hagrid briefly lost his temper at Harry's repeated accusations against Professor Snape.[7] It is unknown if Hagrid ever repaired or replaced it after this incident.
