A S.P.E.W. badge was a badge made during the 1994–1995 school year by Hermione Granger for the purpose of supporting her newly created society, the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare, which intended to establish certain rights for house-elves.

History

A blue S.P.E.W. badge

Hermione Granger created the badges and presented them to Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley when describing the society to them and appointing them secretary and treasurer respectively.

She charged two Sickles for the badges and began a vociferous campaign to get as many people as possible to buy them. Both Harry and Ron bought one to try to keep her quiet, but she instead badgered both them and others to wear them. Some, such as Neville Longbottom, paid simply to stop Hermione from glowering at them. Many, however, regarded the whole society as a joke and refused to buy a badge, including Fred and George Weasley. The house-elf Dobby also wore the badge, him being the only one to do so.

During the 2010–2011 school year, Kevin Farrell found three S.P.E.W. badges tucked behind a book in the Hogwarts Library. Kevin decided to keep one of the badges, as he saw Hermione Granger as a personal hero and wanted a piece of her legacy. He later showed the badges to one of his friends and explained the organisation to them.

Around 28 June 2011, while helping Winky pick up her stuff that they had bumped over in the Hogwarts kitchens, a Hogwarts student found a S.P.E.W. badge amidst it. This led Winky to recall a few things about the organisation.
