- "Sage has both mundane and magical uses, and is even used in divination."
- — Pomona Sprout regarding the uses of sage[src]
Sage is a herb that had both magical and mundane uses, such as divination.[1] It was used by centaurs, along with Mallowsweet, to assist in their stargazing. They burned the herb and observe the flames and fumes produced.[3]
Sage was used in its powdered form in the Memory Potion.[2]
History[]
During the 1989–1990 school year at Hogwarts, Jacob's sibling approached Professor Sprout in the Herbology Classroom asking for herbs that could be given to the centaurs in the Forbidden Forest in order to gain entry to the Centaur Camp, she presented them with sage, lavender and dittany, explaining the uses of each plant to them and allowed them to take which one they pleased.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Salvia and "sage" are derived from the Latin salvere (to save), referring to the healing properties long attributed to the various Salvia species. Modern evidence shows possible uses as an antisweating agent, antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic.[4]
- Sage is also a known herb used in witchcraft and Paganism to banish negative spirits.
