This compass was made by Salazar Slytherin. It was cursed with a unique curse created by Salazar Slytherin himself, which caused snakes to attack the owner of the compass and those around them. The compass itself didn't point north, but could be used to locate two keys which unlocked a scroll case. When the incantation on the scroll was read, the curse would break.
History[]
It was created by Salazar Slytherin and eventually fell into the possession of the Avery family, becoming an heirloom. By the late 1980s, Everett Avery had taken the compass to Hogwarts to search for the snakewood tree branch in order to prove he belonged in Slytherin House. However, in doing so, he accidentally triggered the curse. Whilst searching for the two keys, the compass was briefly stolen by an imp, although Avery managed to recover it. After he and Jacob's sibling managed to break the curse, he held on to the compass.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Although Slytherin's lifespan predates the known arrival of compasses in Europe (with the first recorded mention of them being from between 1187-1202), compasses have been known to exist from the 200s B.C. in China, and as Slytherin is known to have travelled widely, it is not impossible for him to have acquired the knowledge of how to make one.
