Professor San Bakar (fl. 1470s)[4] was a wizard from Yemen that lived during the Tudor period. At one point, he was the professor of Beasts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[3]
Biography[]
San Bakar was born in the country of Yemen. He left his Muggle community when he learned of his magical abilities, and eventually found his way to Great Britain to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was sorted into Slytherin house. Following his graduation, he became the Beasts professor.[3]
San Bakar was a contemporary of Percival Rackham, Niamh Fitzgerald, and Charles Rookwood—and together, the four of them founded the Keepers, an organisation dedicated to the preservation of ancient magic, which they used for benevolent purposes but also kept secret so that nobody could exploit its power.[5]
He was a teacher at the time that Isidora Morganach was a student, and when Morganach graduated and became a professor herself, San Bakar was present as the Keepers mentored her.[6]
San Bakar created a 'trial' for future possessors of ancient magical ability, which involved using a Graphorn to access a secret chamber with a Pensieve. In the case of a future student in the nineteenth century, the Graphorn used was the Lord of the Shore.[2]
As Isidora Morganach became increasingly out-of-control and started manipulating students' pain to build ancient magical repositories, the Keepers (including Bakar) confronted her in a duel in the Keepers' Caverns. There, Bakar himself dispatched Morganach using the Killing Curse—a necessary evil which his fellow Keepers were shocked at, but ultimately accepted.[2]
Personality and traits[]
Bakar was compassionate and kind, and a beast whisperer, as he was centred and calming.[3] That said, he used the Killing Curse on Isidora Morganach when his values were pushed far enough,[2] suggesting that he felt it was a necessary evil.
Magical abilities and skills[]
- Magizoology: Bakar taught the subject Beasts at Hogwarts, meaning he would have been skilled with handling magical beasts.[3]
- Dark Arts: Bakar killed Isidora Morganach with the Killing Curse.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Professor Bakar is voiced by Marwan Salama in Hogwarts Legacy.[7]
- Bakar's blood status is unclear. The Art and Making of Hogwarts Legacy states that he "left his Muggle community in Yemen when he learned of his magical ability", suggesting that he might have been Muggle-born, but it is extremely irregular (though not completely impossible) for a Muggle-born to be sorted into Slytherin.[8] It is also possible that he was a half-blood or pure-blood who was simply raised among Muggles (like Harry Potter and Tom Riddle).

Notes and references[]
- ↑ Though the death of San Bakar has not been seen, this is suggested by (1) a statement by J. K. Rowling that all portraits are at Hogwarts are of dead people (see here) as well as the fact that he is physically unable to help the protagonist out of his portrait form.

- ↑ Hogwarts Legacy, Main Quest "The Path to Hogwarts" – "Vault number twelve was commissioned shortly after Gringotts was founded four centuries ago." Gringotts was founded in 1474 (The Wizarding World of Harry Potter), which means the Keepers and Isidora Morganach must have been active around this time period.
