Scarlett Sparks was a Muggle friend of Penny Haywood, who was attacked by a werewolf in the summer of 1985.[1]
Biography[]
Scarlett was presumably born around the same time Penny Haywood was born, in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and was raised in the Muggle world. Every summer, Scarlett and her family would spend the holiday in Wigtown, where they befriended Penny and her family.[1]
In the summer of 1985, Scarlett and Penny snuck out of their house at night during the full-moon. They found a werewolf which fascinated Scarlett. Scarlett and Penny followed it, with Penny having her wand ready. Eventually, the werewolf noticed it was being followed and turned around. It apparently killed Scarlett before Penny had time to react.[1]
Penny later blamed herself for Scarlett's apparent death and decided to brew a Forgetfulness Potion. From then on, Penny's Boggart became the werewolf.[1] However, Scarlett did not actually die, but was turned into a werewolf.[2]
In the 1986–1987 school year Scarlett was lured to Godric's Hollow with the promise of a large amount of aconite, an ingredient vital to the Wolfsbane Potion but hard to come by. Whilst in Godric's Hollow, reports of her as a werewolf reached the Werewolf Capture Unit's Cecil Lee, who planned to hunt her down. He was stopped by Albus Dumbledore and Jacob's sibling. Jacob's sibling then travelled to Godric's Hollow alongside Penny (who believed the werewolf they were after was the same one that had murdered Scarlett) and captured Scarlett using the full body-bind curse. They kept her bound until morning came, when it was revealed to Penny and Jacob's sibling that Scarlett was a werewolf. Penny ran away, but was consoled by Jacob's sibling who encouraged her and Scarlett to make up with each other.
Later in the morning, Scarlett, Penny, and Jacob's sibling went to the graveyard and met Remus Lupin, who explained that he had gotten a similar letter which he suspected was from Dumbledore. There was a large amount of aconite in a bunch next to them. Lupin said that Scarlett could have it all, though Scarlett insisted that they split it. The group then went to the gathering of the Order of the Phoenix as arranged by Dumbledore and thanked Jacob's sibling for bringing her and Penny back together again.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Scarlett is the first known Muggle (and non-wizard) werewolf confirmed in canon. Her being a werewolf is also unusual, since most Muggles died from werewolf wounds.[4]
