"Is this all real? Or has this been happening inside my head?"
The topic of this article is of a real-life subject that has been mentioned "in-universe" in a canon source. The Harry Potter Wiki is written from the perspective that all information presented in canon is true (e.g., Hogwarts really existed), and, as such, details contained in this article may differ from real world facts. |
- "Screech owls are extremely agile and regularly feast on rabbits, voles, rats, mice and reptiles."
- — Advert at Eeylops Owl Emporium[src]
Screech owls are a species of owl known for their agility. Their diet consists of rabbits, voles, rats, mice and reptiles.
The screech owl is one of several species of owls sold at Eeylops Owl Emporium. One can purchase it for 15 Galleons.[1]
History
On 24 June, 1995, one of these owls delivered Hermione Granger her morning's copy of the Daily Prophet. This was "as usual," so it is possible that this paper was always delivered to her by one of these birds,[2] though on 2 September of that year at the start of the new school year, the paper was delivered to her by a barn owl instead.[3] Just a bit later in the year, however, she had another copy delivered to her by a screech owl.[4]
During the summer holidays of that year, another of these owls sent Harry Potter an official letter from Mafalda Hopkirk telling him that he had been expelled from Hogwarts and that Ministry representatives were coming to destroy his wand.[5]
