- "Hmm ... I could do with a new quill."
- — Hermione Granger's interest in buying a quill from this shop[src]
Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop was a writing supplies store in Hogsmeade set up by Scrivenshaft.[1][2] It sold various quills, parchment and stationery needed for students at Hogwarts. The shop stock included stationery such as rainbow ink and extra-large quills.[1] However, students usually preferred to visit Zonko's Joke Shop or Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes when it came to buying special quills such as joke quills and sugar quills.
History[]
In the 1890s, the owner was Ethel Wigley who was ethical with her use of bird feathers and would only sell quills with feathers that had fallen. During Wigley's time as owner, the shop was often full of cats who either came because they liked the feather quills or because of the treats Wigley left for them.[3]
In 1995, Scrivenshaft's was visited by Hermione Granger on at least one occasion when she wanted to purchase a new quill.[1]
Etymology[]
Scriven is an English surname derived from the Middle English word scrivein or Middle French word escrivain, both meaning 'scribe'. The additional 'shaft' suffix may refer to the part of a pen, pencil or quill.
