Scrope (fl. 1890) was a house-elf that belonged to Apollonia and later Phineas Nigellus Black.[1]
Biography[]
He was formerly a servant of Apollonia Black, a member of the House of Black. She regularly abused the house-elf, once damaging his ear with a cleaver. She also forbade him from entering her private grotto. By the end of Apollonia's life, she was delirious, eventually mistaking belladonna for elderberries and poisoning herself. Before her death, Scrope had attempted to warn her, but she had not listened. He passed to Phineas Nigellus Black.[3]
In the 1890–1891 school year, he was in the Great Hall when he was also approached by a new fifth-year student, who was disguised as Black using Polyjuice Potion. Not knowing their real identity, he told them the password to the Headmaster's office: "toujours pur", the House of Black family motto.[1]
He was cleaning his master's bust in the castle when Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington begged him to clean the ghost's bust, as it had been gathering dust for years and previous attempts at cleaning it were not thorough enough. Scrope didn't want to do it, but was manipulated into agreeing to do the cleaning.[2]
His French was said to be "pitiful".[1]
Physical description[]
Scrope was a house-elf with thin grey hair, blue eyes and pale skin, wearing the rags that his kind wore. At some point, he lost an ear, and afterwards wore a bandage on his head covering the resulting wound.[1]
Etymology[]
Scrope was named after Henry Scrope, 3rd Baron Scrope of Masham, a nobleman who was beheaded for treason.[4] The name is of uncertain etymological origin.
Behind the scenes[]
- Scrope is voiced by French-British actor JB Blanc in Hogwarts Legacy.[5]
- If the player choose Slytherin house, they receive a house-specific quest involving Scrope. He helps the new fifth-year student to find Richard Jackdaw and locate a missing Black family ring that had belonged to Apollonia Black.[3] If the player chooses a different house, this event is contradicted by others.
