There was a sea serpent that lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.

Biography

Before the 1980s, this sea serpent was raised in captivity and was therefore unable to be returned to the wild. When it needed a new home, Rubeus Hagrid took it in at the Magical Creatures Reserve. In the same and the following decade, Jacob's sibling often bonded with and fed this sea serpent.

During the 1980s, a different sea serpent was caught in Muggle shipping lanes and the British Ministry of Magic asked Jacob's sibling if this sea serpent could help guide them back to a safe habitat. Jacob's sibling agreed, and this sea serpent helped the other sea serpent back to the Sea Serpent Sanctuary in the Hebrides.

1986-1987

During the 1986–1987 school year, this sea serpent made friends with a merkid and travelled to the Great Lake daily to play with him. However, this damaged the waterways which connected the Great Lake with the open ocean, threatening an ecological collapse around Hogwarts Castle. Hagrid asked Jacob's sibling and Barnaby Lee to investigate, with the two discovering the sea serpent's connection with the merkid and, with the help of Albus Dumbledore, who spoke Mermish, invited the merkid to visit the sea serpent, instead of the other way around. The merkid agreed and the sea serpent stopped travelling to the Great Lake.

Also during this year, the sea serpent began regularly travelling through the kelp forest in the open ocean. This was causing the Giant Squid at the Magical Creatures Reserve considerable distress, since that was part of its territory and Giant Squids are highly territorial to the point of getting aggressive. Jacob's sibling realised this and cast the Imperturbable Charm on the kelp forest, causing the sea serpent to avoid it.

Behind the scenes

• The sea serpent's name, just like all creatures in the Magical Creatures Reserve, can be customised by the player. The dialogue of the quest will subsequently change according to the name determined by the player.
• During Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, Year 3, Side Quest "AN INKY GIANT SQUID", if the player hasn't unlocked the sea serpent, the sea serpent in the quest will instead be an unnamed sea serpent that wandered into the Magical Creatures Reserve.
