The Self-Fertilising Shrub is a plant that feeds on flesh.[1] Given its name, it has the ability of producing its own fertiliser.

In 1995, Pomona Sprout issued her fifth-year students an essay on these plants.[2] The textbook Flesh-Eating Trees of the World includes some "really good" pictures of these shrubs.[1] These plants are extremely dangerous as they eat human flesh. When handling the self-fertilising plant it is best to wear gloves.

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this is a plant taught to fifth years. This plant requires regular watering and lots of fresh flesh to eat. As the plant fertilises itself, it requires little care. It's not advised to put more than 3 of these plants next to each other as they will most likely kill each other. The self-fertilising shrub is not an easy plant to find, as it lives in the back of caves. This means that when picking a spot to put the shrub, you must find somewhere damp and dark. The self-fertilising shrub does not like other plants and ends up killing the other plants most of the time.
