The Self-Fertilising Shrub is a sentient magical plant that feeds on flesh.[1] Given its name, it has the ability of producing its own fertiliser.

Description

This plant requires regular watering and lots of fresh flesh to eat. As the plant fertilises itself, it requires little care. It is not advised to put more than three of these plants next to each other as they will most likely kill each other. The self-fertilising shrub is not an easy plant to find, as it lives in the back of caves. This means that when picking a spot to put the shrub, one must find somewhere damp and dark. The self-fertilising shrub does not like other plants and will end up killing the other plants most of the time.[2]

History

At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this is a plant taught to fifth years in Herbology class. In 1995, Professor Pomona Sprout issued her fifth year Herbology students an essay on these plants.[3] The textbook Flesh-Eating Trees of the World includes some "really good" pictures of these shrubs.[1] These plants are considered to be extremely dangerous, as they can eat human flesh. When handling the self-fertilising plant it is best to wear gloves.[2]
