A Shopping List was given to students attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry each year over the summer holidays before starting their first term in September, listing what supplies they would need for that year, including books, uniforms, equipment, and other wizarding paraphernalia. All of the necessary Hogwarts's supplies could be bought in Diagon Alley, in London.

The different books and items were chosen by the teachers of each subject, so if the school had a new teacher, the books required for that subject may have changed. Not everyone in a particular year would need the same supplies, as students did not always take the same subjects.

For first-years, the list of supplies came along with their Hogwarts acceptance letters. For third-years, it came along with a permission form that needed to be signed by a parent or guardian in order for the student to be allowed to visit Hogsmeade on designated weekends. For sixth-years, it was came along with their O.W.L. exam results.

Muggle-born wizards and witches could exchange their Muggle money for wizarding money at Gringotts Wizarding Bank to pay for their supplies. If a student and/or their family did not have sufficient funds for an adequate reason, Hogwarts will supply a small bursary amount to buy their supplies, although some things would have to be bought second-hand for a lower price.

A Shopping List was present in the Artefact Room at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

In the 1990s

The contents of the Shopping List during Harry Potter's time are as following. The first-year Shopping List is known in its full form; only the books section of the second-year Shopping List is known; others are summarised through pieces of information revealed in corresponding school years, and thus may be incomplete.

First year

First-year students would require:

• Uniform
  • Three sets of plain work robes (black).
  • One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear.
  • One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar).
  • One winter cloak (black, silver fastenings).
  • Please note that all student's clothes should carry name tags at all times.

  • A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
  • Magical Theory by Adalbert Waffling
  • A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
  • One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
  • Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
  • The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
• Other Equipment
  • 1 Wand
  • 1 Cauldron (pewter, standard size 2)
  • 1 set of glass or crystal phials
  • 1 telescope
  • 1 set of brass scales
  • Students may also bring an Owl OR a Cat OR a Toad.
• PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT FIRST YEARS ARE NOT ALLOWED THEIR OWN BROOMSTICKS.

Second year

Fourth year

Fourth-year students would require:

• Dress robes (only for special occasions that would occur through the year for the 94-95 term)

Fifth year

Fifth-year students would require:

Sixth year

Sixth-year students would require:

In the 2000s

The first-year Shopping List of 2008 signed by Minerva McGonagall is known, albeit a very short one.
