A Slytherin Lock was a device invented by Salazar Slytherin to safeguard Slytherin's Scriptorium in the Dungeons of Hogwarts Castle. They were used to open portcullises with runes within the maze that preceded the main chamber, depicting a snake that would strike the user if they solved the runes incorrectly.[1]
History[]
Noctua Gaunt was struck by the dial during her attempt to break into Slytherin's Scriptorium, but persevered.[1]
When the new fifth-year student and their friends, Sebastian Sallow and Ominis Gaunt, entered the Scriptorium, they had to open gates using these locks.[1]
