The Small Locked Tower[2] was one of the many towers at Hogwarts Castle, housing the Book of Admittance and the Quill of Acceptance, the magical artefacts that constituted the only process by which students were selected for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in their first year.[1] However, students could still transfer from other wizarding schools later in their lives.

The tower had never been visited by any student at Hogwarts, in the thousand-odd years of the school's existence, and the magical artefacts therein had never been touched by human hands ever since the Founders placed them there on completion of the Castle. Many Headermasters and Headmistresses had, however, enjoyed spending quiet hours in the tower, hoping to catch the Book and the Quill in action.[1]

In the 2008–2009 school year, three students entered the tower room for the first time known to history. They did so by catching a flying winged key to open the door. They searched the Book of Admittance for the name Winifred Warrington.[3]

The background of the original Signed-out Homepage, featuring a slightly different tower room

  • Before Pottermore was significantly revamped (and Rowling's description of the Book of Admittance and the Quill of Acceptance was added), the Book and Quill's tower was the background of the Signed-out Homepage. For the new "sample moment", the illustration has had some slight changes made to it, in order to be more compliant to Rowling's information. The old version of the tower is still visible on the registration page for new accounts, however.
